Direct comparison
Microsoft Azure or Google Cloud? The direct cloud comparison of services, data centers, costs and sovereignty. Services, pricing, data centers and sovereignty in a direct comparison.
Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud are technological leaders that primarily differ in their strategic orientation: Azure is the first choice for companies with a strong Microsoft ecosystem, while Google Cloud is optimized for data- and AI-driven innovations. Both providers show high scores in data security (Azure 10/10, Google 9/10) and strategic opportunities (9/10 each), but due to their US jurisdiction with SEAL scores of 4.4/10 and 4.3/10 respectively, they do not meet high requirements for jurisdictional sovereignty. Azure convinces with maximum integration into Microsoft workloads (10/10) and collaboration tools (10/10), while Google Cloud excels in Big Data (10/10) and containerization (10/10). Pricing is comparably moderate for both providers (Azure 4/10, Google 5/10), with actual costs depending heavily on the workload structure. For global expansion, Azure offers a broader basis with 300 data centers in 36 countries compared to Google Cloud with 39 data centers in 25 countries.

Azure is strongly focused on integration into the Microsoft ecosystem (Windows, SQL, Office) and global enterprise infrastructure, with top scores in Microsoft integration (10/10) and collaboration tools (10/10). Google Cloud focuses more on data- and AI-driven workloads, with leading scores in Big Data (10/10) and containerization (10/10), as well as a stronger orientation towards developers and open-source technologies.
Both providers show low SEAL scores due to their US jurisdiction: Microsoft Azure has a SEAL score of 4.4/10 (44%), Google Cloud 4.3/10 (43%). Both do not meet high requirements for jurisdictional sovereignty with SOV-2 Legal scores of 2/10. For higher operational sovereignty, both providers often need to be used via partner solutions (e.g., T-Systems for Google) or specific sovereign cloud offerings.
Google Cloud has a slightly better price rating (5/10) compared to Microsoft Azure (4/10). The cost rating is 5.6/10 for Google Cloud and 5.7/10 for Azure. However, actual costs are heavily workload-dependent: Azure has higher prices for egress (3.0/10) and CPU (4.0/10), while Google Cloud can be more competitive for Generative AI tokens (10.0/10) and Managed MySQL (7.4/10). A precise TCO analysis is required for the respective workload.
Google Cloud leads in Big Data with a score of 10/10, significantly above Azure (8/10) and the average (Ø 4.8), supported by BigQuery and Looker. In AI, Microsoft Azure is slightly ahead with 10/10 compared to Google Cloud with 9/10, although both providers offer comprehensive managed services for training and inference (Azure OpenAI, Vertex AI).
Microsoft Azure offers broader global reach (10/10) with 300 data centers in 36 countries and 70+ regions. Google Cloud has a smaller but still extensive presence (7/10) with 39 data centers in 25 countries and 40+ regions. For purely European or DACH-focused projects, the difference is less relevant, as both are present in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland.
